Refugee Resettlement

Imagine relocating your family to a foreign country where you do not know the language or culture. Your social network of friends and family that you once depended on for stability is no longer available to you. You feel alone and disoriented. You are given a small stipend to pay for food, housing and utilities, but you are expected to find a job and cover these costs on your own in three months. You must find a job where communication is not important until you are able to learn English. Because of your language limitations, only minimum wage jobs are available to you.
Because you grew up in an agrarian society where “many hands made light work” you also have eight mouths to feed. Your large family, which was once a huge asset in your home country, is now a liability.
Unable to provide for your family with your minimum wage job, your wife, who desperately wants to stay home to care for your small children, must also find employment to make ends meet. Your children, who were once helpful and obedient are becoming domineering and unruly. Such is the life of many refugee families who are relocated to Memphis.
Families who relocate to Memphis are in desperate need of sponsors who will “walk” with them through their first four months of life in Memphis, helping them to adjust to their new culture and their new way of life.
